Loop 303 to Jomax Road Final Design

Overview

The City of Peoria, in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), Maricopa County and other agencies, began the final design phase of the El Mirage Road: Loop 303 to Jomax Road project in spring 2026. Final design is anticipated for completion in fall 2027 and construction of the four-lane roadway could begin as early as 2028. 

The improved roadway corridor will help meet current and future traffic needs in this rapidly growing area, create another connection to and from Loop 303 in north Peoria and improve regional connectivity. It will also provide active transportation amenities, including a bicycle path and sidewalks and maintain access to the Maricopa Trail.

Project improvements include:

  • Extending and widening El Mirage Road between Loop 303 and Jomax Road to provide two travel lanes in each direction separated by a median with a six-foot-wide bicycle lane and eight-foot-wide sidewalk in both directions.

  • Restriping 2,000 feet of El Mirage Road between Corte Bella Drive and Loop 303 (no new roadway reconstruction will occur south of Loop 303).

  • Constructing crossings over the McMicken Dam Outlet Channel and the Beardsley Canal. Both crossings will include bicycle lanes, sidewalks and safety railing. A reinforced concrete box culvert is planned at the McMicken Dam Outlet Channel and a single-span concrete bridge is planned over the Beardsley Canal. 

  • Signalizing the El Mirage Road intersections at the Loop 303 traffic interchange and Happy Valley Road.

  • Constructing roundabouts at the El Mirage Road intersections with Mariposa Grande Lane, Coldwater Ranch Drive and Jomax Road.

This rendering illustrates the four-lane interim roadway corridor cross-section being refined during final design. The roadway corridor will slope to the outside for drainage. The 38-foot median would accommodate future widening to the ultimate, six-lane configuration. However, the four-lane interim roadway corridor is expected to accommodate traffic through 2050.  

The environmental review, consultation and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being or have been carried out by ADOT pursuant to 23 USC 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated 06/25/2024 and executed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and ADOT.
